            <p>Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg dumped nearly $300,000 into the bank account of Initiative 594, which would expand gun background checks in Washington beyond federal requirements, reports seattlepi.com’s Joel Connelly. This comes after “Everytown for Gun Safety,” a political action committee formed by Bloomberg, contributed more than $1.9 million toward the now eight figure initiative. If the initiative passes, Washington would be the first state in the West to adopt controversial gun safety legislation. Although the NRA successfully blocked background checks in Congress, this is the first local gun-control campaign it hasn’t spent heavily on, especially in comparison to a 1994 initiative to ban assault weapons and 1997 trigger lock initiative. — T.W.</p>
