Defying a request from Baltimore PD that she appoint a special prosecutor, State's Attorney Marilyn Moseby announced the charges at a press conference on Friday morning. According to the Baltimore Sun, Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., 45, the driver of the police van that was transporting Gray, was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, second-degree assault, vehicular manslaughter and misconduct. Five other officers were also charged. Baltimore's medical examiner ruled Gray's death a homicide.

Moseby, 35, who has been in office just four months, asked for calm in the wake of her announcement. "I heard your call for 'no justice, no peace,'" she said. "Your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man."

“She gave us her word," Tawanda Jones told The New York Times. Jones's brother was killed in violent scuffle with police. "I said, ‘How will you handle police brutality?’ She said, ‘If you put me in this chair, I don’t care if they are in uniform or not. I come from a family of officers. Some are good, some are bad, I will hold everybody accountable to the law.’ And thank you, Jesus, she lived it out.”
