Comedy is scarce in Venezuela right now, or at least stand-up comics increasingly are. Laureano Marquez is one such comic, whose jokes sometimes highlight the strangeness of life in under President Nicholas Maduro: Oil is cheap but basic goods like milk and toilet paper are hard to come by.
NPR reports that three of the comic's recent shows were cancelled when the venues were shut down for alleged tax evasion, and Marquez has also been barred from performing at government-run theaters and hotels.
