A gray wolf died Monday after being struck by a car on I-90 between North Bend and Snoqualmie Pass, reports KOMO News. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is investigating whether the wolf was wild. If it was, than this would be the first hard proof that wolves have migrated into western Washington.

Wolves were hunted to extinction in Washington sometime in the early 20th century but have slowly been returning east of the mountains. In a 2014 study, the WDFW estimated the state's wolf population at around 68. Although WDFW has long suspected wolves have moved into Western Washington, they have been unable to find conclusive evidence.
