Tomorrow, HBO will mark World AIDS Day with a new documentary, “Countdown to Zero.” The segment, airing Tuesday at 6 p.m., looks at the remarkable progress being made on AIDS/HIV prevention and treatment.
HBO VICE producer Shane Smith included Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center among the stops he made to learn how close we are to discovering a cure and a vaccine. Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institutes of Allergy and Immunology, weighs in on why research being done at Fred Hutch (and in Dr. Carl June’s lab at the University of Pennsylvania) is so pivotal.
Others featured in the documentary for commentary include President George W. Bush, who launched the U.S.-led President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), and U2’s lead singer Bono, who’s been a significant activist worldwide in the fight against AIDS.
