A draft report submitted by the state commission on landslides to KUOW suggests 22 improvements the state can take in emergency preparedness so far, although the final report isn’t due to Gov. Jay Inslee until Dec. 15. The first recommendation is to integrate and fund Washington's emergency management system, a huge concern brought up during a legislative hearing last month in Olympia ("Are we ready for the next disaster?" Crosscut, Dec. 4). Providing a plan for mass fatalities, improving situational awareness and mapping statewide landslide hazards are among the others listed in the report. With less than 15 percent of Washington mapped for landslides, little is known about the risks the public may be exposed to when buying and building on land. Aside from some language and wordsmithing, KUOW reports the draft will stay mostly unchanged when it appears on Inslee’s desk later this month.
