The family of a Japanese woman killed in a crash between a bus and a Ride-the-Ducks vehicle filed a wrongful death lawsuit today. The suit's targets include the Ride-the-Ducks company and the city of Seattle and state of Washington. One basis of the suit is the claim that the city, state and Ride-the-Ducks were aware that the stretch of road on the Aurora Bridge where the crash occurred was dangerous (it’s narrow and has no barrier between opposing lanes of traffic). The woman, Mami Sato, was one of five killed, and had just moved to the United States four days earlier to study English at North Seattle Community College.
As of May 20, there were 15 other lawsuits from victims of the crash, but those numbers are expected to rise, according to a KING 5 report. A judge involved with some of these suits told KING 5 that a trial would likely start in fall 2018.
