In Oregon, Gov. Kate Brown signed legislation Monday requiring background checks on private gun sales — the first time in nearly 15 years, The Oregonian reports, that the state has tightened gun laws. "We have an obligation to protect Oregonians from gun violence," Brown said. "If we want to keep our kids, schools and communities safe, we must make it harder for dangerous people to get guns." The difference in the vote, writes The Oregonian’s Jeff Mapes, were two Democrats elected to the state Senate with the backing of a group financed by Michael Bloomberg.
