Larry Stone, the superb Seattle Times sports columnist, began a piece this week with a hopeful, maybe even desperate claim: “There’s a good baseball team lurking within the Mariners, struggling to get out.” The evidence so far this season has been to the contrary, but Stone made a good case for patience among fans. As if on cue, the team crushed the San Diego Padres at Safeco field Tuesday night, 11-4. The rout included six home runs – two by the light-hitting catcher Mike Zunino – and was the first victory of the year for pitcher James Paxton. That’s four wins in a row for the Ms, a season-best streak.
