As the city smoldered, a nagging question emerged once again: Why would people ruin their own neighborhoods? But it should come as no surprise, writes Georgetown sociology prof Michael Eric Dyson in The New York Times: "As the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. announced in the wake of the Watts riots 50 years ago, 'a riot is the language of the unheard.'”

Baltimore residents have had enough of the mayhen, though. Even gang members joined the Baltimore City Council in calling for peace. “If we can stick together doing something negative, then we can stick together doing something positive,” said a gang member identified as Trey, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Then there was the now famous BaltimoreMom who took matters into her own hands when she saw her young son at the riots. "That's my only son," she told CNN, "and at the end of the day I don't want him to be a Freddie Gray."
