For anyone who’s ever been in a newsroom or even seen a realistic movie portrayal, as in “All The President’s Men,” the news out of The New York Times may seem bittersweet. After a tradition of at least 60 years and shared by most newspapers in the nation, the Times’ daily Page 1 meeting is being spiked. Instead the afternoon news meeting will talk more about coverage issues and about choosing stories for online devices like smart phones, which now account for about half the Times’ readership.
