Seattle billionaire Paul G. Allen announced yesterday that he's throwing $100 million at cell research to help understand disease and disease treatment through the creation of the Allen Institute for Cell Science. What's Allen see in all those cells? According to Monday's announcement, "The Allen Institute for Cell Science will take a multidisciplinary, team science-driven approach to understanding a fundamental and yet elusive question in cell science: How does information encoded in our genes become three-dimensional living cells, and what goes wrong in disease?"Rick Horwitz, former Director of the NIH-funded Cell Migration Consortium, will head the institute. His first project will be the creation of the Allen Cell Observatory, which will integrate cellular and molecular research into a visual database of cell models. — B.A.
