Last night The Olympian reported on two gunmen who were killed on Sunday in Garland Texas. The two men fired shots at a security officer outside a controversial contest which would award $10,000 for the best cartoon depiction of the Prophet Muhammad hosted by the New York-based American Freedom Defense Initiative. The gunmen drove up to the Curtis Culwell Center as the contest was ending and open fired at a security officer. The officers then returned fire and killed both men.
The event featured several speakers including Pamela Geller, president of the AFDI, and Geert Wilders, a Dutch lawmaker and outspoken critic of Islam. Wilders received several standing ovations as he spoke.
"Muhammad fought and terrorized people with the swords,” said Wilder in his speech. “Today, here in Garland, we fight Muhammad and his followers with the pen. And the pen, the drawings, will prove mightier than the sword," Wilders said during his speech.”
After the shooting, around 75 attendees were escorted by authorities to another room in the conference center. One woman held up an American flag as the crowd sang "God Bless America."
