A lawsuit settlement aims to assure that the Port of Seattle will limit the amount of stormwater runoff pouring from one of its piers into Elliott Bay. The federal  court settlement, filed Monday, concerns the Clean Water Act, and would require the Port of Seattle to regularly check in with the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance on pollution prevention there as well as pay a $50,000 fine toward efforts to mitigate pollution. Soundkeeper sued the Port and previous tenant at Pier 66 in September 2014 for letting stormwater flow into Elliott Bay. Though the water was never tested (Soundkeeper contends the Port refused), Soundkeeper said in a press release today that runoff from similar facilities often contain petroleum, heavy metals and other pollutants toxic to wildlife. "The Port of Seattle has long taken environmental compliance very seriously," said Peter McGraw, adding that the lawsuit settlement will put into writing best practices that had previously not been defined, giving all parties clear priorities.
