Tim Eyman joins Paul Allen in the initiative fun

Tim Eyman can celebrate the national holiday early after turning in a boatload of initiative petition signatures today (apparently well above what the state recommends). The signatures  pertain to Initiative 1366, a measure that would ask voters whether to amend the constitution to require two-thirds approval for tax increases. If Legislature fails to send an amendment to the people, the initiative would require a cut in the state's sales tax rate of a full percentage point, from 6.5 percent to 5.5 percent. The Secretary of State's communications director, Dave Ammons, says the presence of Eyman's measure could help fall general election turnout because Eyman's critics usually advertise heavily, sparking more attention from voters. Plus, I-1401, which deals with protecting endangered species, also appears headed to the ballot. And it's backed by Paul Allen — who probably can find a few dollars to donate for advertising.
