Sightline reports that Portland-based Precision Castparts Corporation tops the country’s toxic air polluter list based on a new ranking from the University of Massachussetts. The school’s Toxic 100 Air Polluters ranking also features many of the usual suspects: Dow (#5), ExxonMobile (6), General Electric (10) and ConocoPhillips (13). The rankings are based on data from the Environmental Protection Agency, and take account of pollution volume, toxicity and health risk. The data show that Precision, which casts metal parts for planes, releases large quantities of heavy metals (chromium, cobalt and nickel). List compiler — and U of M economics professor — Michael Ash told Sightline that most of Precision's toxic releases, which are permitted by the EPA, come from plants in Southern California.
