This morning, a transgender activist announced her run in a wide open race for a Washington State House of Representatives's seat, representing the 43rd Legislative District of Capitol Hill South Lake Union, Wallingford and parts of the University District.

The Stranger reports that Danni Askini, executive director of the Gender Justice League, aims to run on a platform of housing affordability, homelessness, skyrocketing costs of higher education and civil rights for transgender people. Askini will run as a Democrat, in her first campaign for elective office. If she wins, according to her campaign, she will be the first transgender person elected to public office in Washington.

Rep. Brady Walkinshaw is leaving the seat to run for Congress. Capitol Hill Seattle notes that Askini joins a race with plenty of competition. The first among them was Nicole Macri, a homelessness advocate, who announced her run early in February. Others include LGBT advocate Thomas Pitchford, attorney Daniel Shih and Sameer Ranade with the Washington Environmental Council.
