Traffic congestion is not just a problem here in Seattle, but in every major city across the country.
In an effort to produce innovative solutions to traffic utilizing technology, Paul Allen’s firm Vulcan Inc. is contributing $10 million in prize money to a U.S. Department of Transportation contest that will award $50 million to the city with the best idea. The DOT said in a press release today, “The winning city will be awarded up to $40 million from the U.S. DOT...to implement bold, data-driven ideas by making transportation safer, easier, and more reliable.” Cities with 2010 census populations between 200,000 and 850,000 can enter the contest.
One stipulation of the prize is that the winning city work with Vulcan to implement its plan. Allen was motivated by a desire to reduce greenhouse gases, 25 percent of which are attributable to the U.S.’ current transportation system, according to a story today in The Seattle Times.
