Crosscut and KCTS 9 are sponsoring a debate in one of the biggest political races in Washington state this year: the battle for a seat representing the Seattle area's 7th Congressional District. There's a field of five candidates have filed with the Federal Election Commission to replace 28-year Member of Congress Jim McDermott, but the field will be reduced to two finalists in the Aug. 2 primary.

Crosscut and KCTS 9 will present a one-hour debate with the primary candidates at 6:30 p.m. on May 25 in Room 210 of Kane Hall at the University of Washington. (Event details and registration are here.)

The five active candidates are former Burien Mayor Arun Jhaveri, state Sen. Pramila Jayapal, King County Councilmember Joe McDermott, state Rep. Brady Piñero Walkinshaw and community activist Donovan Rivers. The state's official candidate filing period isn't until May 16 to 20, however.

Moderating the debate will be KCTS 9's Enrique Cerna, veteran journalist Joni Balter and Crosscut's managing editor, Drew Atkins.
