Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has expressed support for a legal weed delivery program in the city, but is now facing opposition from pot shop owners, GeekWire reports.
House Bill 2368 would create a two-year pilot program to test legal weed delivery in Seattle. The legalization of marijuana in the state in 2012 did not establish a framework for delivery, leading to many illegal pot delivery services in the Seattle region. These services do not pay taxes, causing complaints that they undercut the voter-approved legal market.
But many of the city's recreational marijuana shop owners say the market is not ready for legal delivery yet. Chief among their concerns is the current lack of access to credit card processing software, which would put their employees in danger if they had to drive around the city with enormous amounts of cash.
The proposed pilot program would first need to pass the state legislature in March before legal delivery can happen. The focus for the city for now is to eliminate illegal delivery services.
