King Felix Hernandez only gave up one hit in the Mariners' opening day in Texas today. Good news, right? Not so much. Despite the Rangers' quiet bats, the M's gave away nine "free" baserunners — six walks, two errors and one batter hit by a pitch. Combine all that with a dinky hit from Rangers big-man Prince Fielder and you've got yourself a 2-3 loss.
If you're looking for bright spots, Felix actually looked pretty good, save for a head-scratching 5th inning. With one home run each, Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager did what they're paid to do in the batters' box. And the Mariners' much-questioned bullpen looked pretty good.
The loss today snaps a nine-year opening day winning streak for the Mariners. It's also wiped out Felix's no-loss opening day record. While it's sad to see those fun-facts vanish and everything, Felix has also never pitched in a playoff game. When something isn't working (like, for example, the Seattle Mariners since 2001), maybe something new on opening day is just what this team needs.
