At-large Seattle City Council candidate Jonathan Grant is saying he was blackmailed over the weekend, reports the Seattle Times. According to Grant, he was approached by Senior Vice President of Triad Capital Partners Brett Allen on Saturday concerning a pending lawsuit between Triad and the Tenants Union where until recently Grant was the Executive Director. Allen allegedly told Grant he could make an Independent Expenditure, started to raise money for Grant's opponent Council President Tim Burgess, disappear if Grant convinced the Tenants Union to settle the lawsuit.
Giving credence to the accusation are text messages Allen sent to former Mayor Mike McGinn asking him to help set up the meeting. "Any deal would be contingent on the 200k IE going away," wrote Allen. "...Grant could simply instruct his attorney (Knoll Lowney) to accept our offer on the table (or make a counter)."
Allen maintains Grant is spinning the interaction to his advantage.
As of yet unclear are the legal ramifications. Head of the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission Wayne Barnett told the Times the matter is out of the body's purview.
