Larger than a Navy aircraft carrier, twice the diameter of the Tacoma Dome and nearly two times the height of the Space Needle: These are record-setting dimensions for a container vessel stopping at the Port of Tacoma. The Zim Djibouti, a ship that arrived in Tacoma this morning, has a capacity of 10,000 container units and marks the start of a trend towards larger vessels in the Pacific Northwest. The News Tribune reports the port will embark on several projects to accommodate these larger vessels, including using wider cranes and eventually widening the entire Blair waterway, which is the current entrance to the port. The ship made its first visit to Seattle in 2009.
