About six weeks ago, Cindi Laws watched a 4-year-old child throw a fit over getting a toy from the vending machine at the Rainier Beach Safeway.  She was horrified when the little guy said, “But mom! I wanna be a gangster!” When she looked more closely at the top capsules, she realized they were filled with assault weapons, brass knuckles and the like. Laws alerted the store manager, who was as surprised and disturbed as she was. So they decided to create a more positive message for a neighborhood kids that's had a tough year: Gun violence in Rainier Valley is up 165 percent.Safeway is presenting and hosting “Boo Bash at the Beach” — Rainier Beach, that is. It's a fun, safe neighborhood party, complete with music, a bouncy house and trick or treating. From 4 to 9 p.m. on Friday, booths offering games, projects (like making costumes) and, of course, candy will line Rainier Avenue. Mounted officers from the Seattle Police Department will be on hand so kids can pet their horses, and the Fire Department is bringing a truck — and gear for youngsters to try on. It's nice to see local residents, corporations and public servants join together to take away real world fright on Halloween night. — C.R.
