An earlier version of this story said the Common Core Standards are federally approved. They are a set of standards that were developed by governors and education commissioners through their representative organizations, the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards are implemented by state and local governments. The U.S. Department of Education gives priority treatment for some competitive grants to states that adopt the standards.
