Four days without the Viaduct? OMG. At 10 p.m. on next Friday, Aug. 22 — a truly dark hour — the Washington State Department of Transportation plans to shut down our favorite elevated highway between South Spokane Street and Valley Street. In both directions. For four days. The section of 99 south of the Battery Street Tunnel will open back up for Monday, Aug. 25’s morning commute; BUT the tunnel itself and the stretch north to Valley Street will be off limits until 5 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27. “We need Seattle commuters to plan ahead for this closure,” said Dave Sowers, WSDOT’s deputy administrator for the Viaduct Replacement Program. Like, yeah! Here’s our plan: Stay home. — M.B.
