The Department of Energy announced a new $16 million initiative to fund seventeen projects across the country that will "help sustainably and efficiently capture energy from waves, tides and currents." Three Pacific Northwest projects are included in the listing; one in Seattle through the University of Washington, and two in Corvallis, Oregon through Oregon State University. The UW project aims to document the behavioral responses of killer whales, seals, sea lions and many other marine wildlife species to the sounds produced by turbines used to gather tidal energy. One OSU project will center around studying the noise levels of a wave energy converter in relation to marine mammals and fish, along with other man-made sources near the installation site. The other OSU project will study fish interaction with the energy devices, which will help to make decisions relating to device or mooring design to minimize their interaction with fish.
