New research from the UW suggests that, after “decades” of commercial whaling, California blue whale populations are recovering: “Although blue whales as a species are not doing well worldwide, the California population of about 2,200 has recovered to 97 percent of their historical levels.” A delightful surprise to be sure, but don;t get cocky. UW researcher Cole Monnahan warns that protections for the endangered species must stay in place. And here's some not-so-great news: According to a recent study published by researchers at the University of Idaho and Oregon State University, the Northwest’s annual temperature has risen by 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit over the last 100 years. Those of you reveling in the “warmest, sunniest summer in historical record” may want to consider taking a kayak out tomorrow, instead of a gas-guzzling power yacht. Just a thought.
