The Daily was there Wednesday evening when Seattle-based company Coinme unveiled its new bitcoin ATM at the University of Washington. This is the second bitcoin kiosk in Seattle (Spitfire restaurant in Belltown also has one) and the 20th in the nation. Although the digital currency operates independently of central banking systems, this ATM is licensed by the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions. So, in essence, it works like any other bank. The kiosk allows bitcoin users to access their accounts, deposit, transfer and withdraw money. And in less than 10 minutes, non-users can create an account by entering some personal information and having a palm scanned. — T.W.
