David Harris, leader of Hack the CD and first-place winner of Crosscut’s Community Idea Lab, has been named one of Seattle’s most influential people by Seattle Magazine. Harris worked as an engineer at Microsoft — a member of its minuscule African American workforce, which comprises only 2 percent of Microsoft employees. Harris seeks to buck that trend by teaching tech and business to low-income students while also connecting them with professionals. In so doing, Harris aims to not only diversify the tech world, but to empower people in the Central District to keep up with Seattle’s rapidly changing neighborhoods. The end vision? A diverse, innovation district in the CD. — D.K.
