The University of Washington’s newly unionized medical residents and fellows, who’ve formed the University of Washington Housestaff Association (UWHA), are in the process of renegotiating their contract. The doctors, who are receiving advanced training through a residency or fellowship, argue that their salaries, ranging from $53,268 to $69,792, are not adequate. They want to be paid commensurately with the lowest-paid physician assistants. UW administration says they’re asking for too much money. According to the Seattle Times, five Seattle City Council members (including Jean Godden and Nick Licata, whose terms ended Dec. 31) weighed in on the negotiations via a letter last month to UW President Ana Maria Cauce and urged UW to meet the UWHA’s demands.
