Uncertainty is afoot in Pioneer Square, where the viaduct has sunk about an inch and a half, possibly as a result of groundwater pumping (part of repairs to the stalled deep bore tunnel project). WSDOT viaduct replacement project manager Todd Trepanier reported at a Seattle City Council briefing Monday that, for the time being, the viaduct appears stabilized, but the agency doesn't have enough information to be sure. SDOT, SPU, Seattle City Light and DPD were also at the briefing. What we do know, according to SPU, is that one of Pioneer Square's biggest water mains has shifted to the point that it could be at risk of bursting and will need to be replaced. The Square itself seems largely safe: Only two out of 30 buildings WSDOT surveyed had developed new cracks. Crosscut's full story is coming later today. — B.A.
